Common Skin Concerns: Wrinkles/Fine Lines

Overview

Wrinkles and Fine lines are a natural process of life that your skin goes through. It starts at the age of 25 and is also caused by sun damage and other environmental and life factors. At BEAUTILASE we can help to slow down the formation of fine lines and wrinkles through our advanced technologies.

Causes

  • Age: As we get older our skin becomes thinner and drier due to the depletion of hyaluronic acid in our body (Hyaluronic Acid is a gooey substance that is naturally produced by your body). Largest amounts of Hyaluronic Acid is found in your skin, connective tissue and eyes as it holds thousand times its moisture. The production of collagen and elastin becomes reduced and therefore the skin becomes thinner and has less ability to protect itself from sun, wind, cold, pollution and tobacco smoke. This leads to wrinkles, lines, crepeness and creases on the skin.
  • Reacted facial expression: It is when one uses a facial muscle repeatedly to smile, frown or squint and this leads to the forming of grooves under the skin surface which leads to fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Exposure to Sun (UV) Light: Breaks collagen and elastane fibres leading to early signs of aging, namely wrinkles.
  • Jobs in harsher weather conditions: Fishermen, Farmers, Sailors, Golfers, Beach lifeguards and Gardeners may also be more prone to early signs of aging.
  • Smoking: Reduces the blood flow to the skin and forms fine lines and wrinkles as a result of dehydration.
  • Alcohol: Dehydrates and dries the skin leading to fine lines and wrinkles

There are two different types of wrinkles: dynamic and static.

  • Dynamic wrinkles appear during muscle contraction which spring back to normal e.g. crow’s feet (squinting), smile lines (smiling) and frown lines (furrowing)
  • Static wrinkles are when dynamic wrinkles remain permanently and deep due to the loss of elasticity, fat and collagen and are also caused by gravity

Types Of Wrinkles

Crow’s Feet

The area round the eyes is 50% thinner, therefore this is where you see the first signs of aging. Crow’s feet are deep or fine lines that appear at the corner of the eyes due to age and loss of collagen and elastin fibres.

Crow’s feet also develop over time because of tiny muscle contractions that happen every time you make a facial expression e.g. squinting etc.

Under Eye Wrinkles

This area is also 50% thinner than the rest of the face, hence this is where you also see the first signs of aging. Skin loses its elasticity and fatty deposits causing the sagging of fine skin, leading to puffiness, crepeness and sagging.

Frown Lines And Furrowed Eye Brows

Primarily a result of the tissue tightening between the eyebrows into a fold. Also the reparation action of underlying muscle associated with facial expression stress (facial tension) and many years of squinting and frowning can lead to deep wrinkles in the skin between eyebrows and bridge of the nose.

Other factors are sun (UV light), repeated expressions, stress (facial tension), smoking and genetics play a big role in how resilient you are to lines and wrinkles.

Nasolabial Folds

Nasolabial Folds are the two folds that are run from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth. They define the face structures and it also supports the fat masses (buccal fat pad) and separates the cheeks from the upper lip.

Nasolabial Folds look deeper as we age due to deep wrinkles, line, dehydration and muscle contractions that happen every time you make a facial expression e.g. smile, talking etc.

Smoking is the biggest cause of the Nasolabial Folds followed by sun damage where ultraviolet rays breakdown the collagen and elastin fibres which makes them more prominent.

Marionette Line

Marionette Lines run from the corner of the mouth to the jawline.  They are more prominent with age as the collagen and elastin fibres breakdown and lose volume in the face. They also give people an angry and sad expression even when their face is resting.  Gravity also plays a big part in a drooping face and also as we lose collagen and elastin fibres over time and age.

Laugh Lines

Laugh Lines are wrinkles or creases around the outer corner of the mouth and eyes. Commonly caused by the repetition of facial movements, including frowning, smiling, laughing, and any other facial expression and are due to a breakdown of elastin and collagen fibres with age.

Neck Wrinkles

Neck Wrinkles / Lines are a natural part of aging but are accelerated by excessive exposure to the sun (UV Rays) which breaks down collagen and elastin fibres.  Also repeatedly looking down on the mobile phone is a potential cause.
