Common Skin Concerns: Keratosis Pilaris

Overview

Keratosis Pilaris is a common harmless skin condition that causes patches of rough bumps to appear on the skin. These tiny bumps or pimples are actually dead skin cells plugging hair follicles. They sometimes appear red or brown in colour.

The condition, in most people, goes away in adulthood. The exact cause of Keratosis Pilaris is unknown but can be genetic. It is more common in females rather than males.

Keratosis Pilaris is commonly on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. These bumps don’t usually cause any discomfort or itching.

There is no specific cure but treatment to control or minimise symptoms may involve a range of skin care therapies.

Symptoms

  • Itchy and dry skin
  • Slight redness
  • Rough feeling bumps
  • Different colours depending on skin tone

How To Treat Keratosis Pilaris

Although there isn’t a cure for Keratosis Pilaris it can be controlled. You can achieve good temporary improvement by following a regular skin care programme but treatment needs to be ongoing and usually requires a combination of therapies. Treatment options include:

Facial Peels

There are three main types of treatment for skin peeling – Chemical Peels, Herbal Peels and Carbon Laser Peels.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal is a fast, effective, virtually painless way to get permanent hair reduction and makes waxing and shaving a thing of the past.
